Biography

Jorge Flavio Sarmiento Falla is a lecturer at the UCF Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. He has taught more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students in courses such as operations research, systems simulation, quality engineering and engineering statistics. In 2024, he received UCF’s Excellence in Graduate Student Teaching Award. His research centers on agile systems, discrete event simulation, queueing systems, quality engineering and continuous improvement — particularly in healthcare and service industries. His dissertation used PLS-SEM to examine how IT ambidexterity and human resource practices support workforce agility and job performance in Peruvian healthcare.

Sarmiento is Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified and proficient in simulation and data analytics tools including Simio, R, and Python. He has published in Applied Sciences and presented at international conferences. A former graduate teaching associate and member of the IISE Greater Miami Professional Chapter, he is committed to advancing engineering education and mentoring the next generation of professionals.
