Innovative Educational Projects and Activities
An Industry-Academic Partnership to Enhance Capstone Engineering Design (with M. Mullens at UCF)
The goal of the project was to develop and evaluate an industry-academic partnership that was designed to enhance the capstone engineering design experience in the Industrial Engineering and Management Systems Department for both the students and for industry. There are a number of university programs that utilize capstone design projects that take place at industrial sites to provide their students with a “real world” design experience prior to graduation. Unique to the IEMS-UCF program, is the requirement for the industry partner to provide an engineering mentor (usually separate from the client) to provide guidance to the students at the industrial site. Few academic programs can afford to assign a faculty member to the industry site to support and mentor the students; however, it would be expected that there would be many benefits to having a faculty mentor, in addition to the industry mentor, on site at the company. These benefits include the additional instruction and mentorship provided to the students, enhancement of the overall product provided to the industry, enhancement to the industry mentor’s effectiveness, and other consults that the faculty member could provide. This study, jointly supported by both UCF and Disney, examined the effects of an increased level of faculty availability (faculty mentorship) at the industrial site.
Systems Analysis into Senior Design (with M. Mullens at UCF)
A two semester sequence of courses providing students with a capstone experience in design has been developed. Students work on real world projects with local clients. Past clients include Walt Disney World, AT&T, UPS, NASA, Regal Marine, Winter Park Hospital, Park Care Community Health Center, Orange County Sheriffs Department, and the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community. Students belong to a virtual consulting firm called Knight Engineering. Experiential learning, on the job training, and continuing education are key elements of this course sequence.
Introduction of Cooperative Learning Groups (with R.L. Armacost at UCF)
Cooperative Learning Groups (CLG) have been introduced into the Decision Analysis, Systems Analysis, and Cost Engineering courses. CLGs are intended to create more participative learning through active cognitive processing of course material. Special in class group exercises have been developed to introduce and reinforce course materials.
Special Student Need Based Course Development (at UCF and UVA)
Research Foundations for IE and OR Modeling (UCF) and Mathematical Systems Theory (UVA). A special course was developed to enhance the students ability to read and understand the research literature. This course is primarily for doctoral students that are preparing to do research in IE or OR. A set of course notes was developed (in the form of a draft text) to form the basis for this course.
Development of Readings Packets (at UCF)

Multimedia Approach for Academically At-Risk Children
Rodman Design Course (Freshman design course for Rodman Scholars at UVa)
Course materials and two special design projects were developed requiring the students to develop and test prototypes: (1) Design a Weighing Device (materials kit and requirements were developed) and (2) Mouse Trap Pull (students design a vehicle using a mouse trap to pull a weight sled--similar to a tractor pull)
Invention and Design (NSF funded project while at UVa)
Developed and conducted a team taught interdisciplinary course on invention and design. Students were required to design and build a “telephone” based on Bell’s notes.

SERVICE ACTIVITIES
Areas of Service Interest and Focus
Dr. Pet-Armacost’s professional service has extended well beyond the university to include a very significant commitment to several different professional organizations. Her extensive and continuing involvement with the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), and the Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-SMC) has clearly enhanced her national reputation. This is demonstrated by her election as Vice President of Technical Networking or IIE (2002), the Director of the OR Division of IIE for the1998-2000 term, election as a member of the governing administrative committee (ADCOM) of IEEE-SMC for 1997-1998, election as Vice President for Membership and Student Activities for IEEE-SMC (1998-2000), appointment by the President of INFORMS to Chair the Membership and Member Services Committee and to co-Chair the Task Force on Young Member Recruitment and Retention (1997-1998), and appointment to Chair a Task Force on Member Needs for INFORMS (1998-1999). She also served as the Chair of the Computer Chapter (1994-1996) and Secretary (1995-1997) of the local Canaveral Section of IEEE.
Dr. Pet-Armacost’s active participation in conferences has also allowed her to provide other services to the professional societies. She has served as Session Chair in ten conferences, was the Contributed Papers Chair for the IEEE-SMC Conference in 1991, was the Technical Arrangements Chair for the IEEE-SMC Conference in October 1997, and a member of the Program Committee for the IERC Conference in May 1999. In addition, she has jointly conducted workshops at the INFORMS National meetings with other leaders of the Institute. She has also reviewed numerous papers for a variety of journals and refereed proceedings.
Within the University, Dr. Pet-Armacost has been involved in service activities at all levels. She served on two University committees involved with establishment of performance indicators related to operational excellence. She was elected as an Engineering Senator to the Faculty Senate for the 1996-1998 term. She served on the University’s Budget and Administrative Procedures Committee during 1996-1997 and served on the University’s Graduate Policy and Curriculum Committee (1997-1998). At the College level, she served as the College Assessment Coordinator. She served on the College of Engineering Library Committee and the COE Compression Model Committee. In addition, at the Departmental level she is actively involved in curriculum reviews and development. She coordinated the research colloquium, assisted in the development of the assessment matrices for SACS, and served as the Chair of the Assessment Committee and the ABET Review Committee in preparation for the 1996 ABET accreditation visit.
